"No Cost" Crosswalks and Bike lanes

The Bureau of Street Services (BOSS) has a 15 month in advance schedule of streets to be repaved in Los Angeles. When these streets are re-paved, the LADOT goes in and re-stripes the street. This is an opportunity to study the streets and work to make it MORE people friendly by adding crosswalks, calming speeders via road diets and creating safe accommodations for non-motorized modes of travel such as bicycles. Timing these improvements with the re-pavement schedule means they come at no extra cost.

The key, is to engage the neighborhood surrounding the streets. Compelling BOSS to make the re-pavement schedule public many months in advance give Neighborhood Councils and neighbors to get together and discuss how they want their streets to be laid out.
